Senior Structural Engineer

Location: London, UK
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Working Arrangement: Hybrid / Flexible Working

About the Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Structural Engineer to join a growing structural engineering team within a leading multidisciplinary engineering consultancy based in London.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced structural engineer to take a leading role in the delivery of technically challenging projects across a diverse range of sectors, including data centres, commercial developments, logistics and distribution facilities, industrial buildings, residential developments and energy infrastructure.

Working alongside experienced engineers, designers and other construction professionals, you will contribute to the development of innovative, efficient and sustainable structural solutions. You will have the opportunity to take ownership of design packages, lead project delivery, build client relationships and support the development of junior engineers.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with a practical, commercially aware approach to engineering, ensuring that designs are safe, buildable, cost-effective and aligned with project requirements.

The Role

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for leading and delivering structural engineering projects from concept design through to detailed design and construction.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the structural design and analysis of buildings and structures across a variety of sectors.
  • Developing efficient structural solutions using reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry and other appropriate construction materials.
  • Undertaking structural calculations, analysis and design in accordance with relevant Eurocodes, British Standards and project-specific requirements.
  • Managing structural design packages, ensuring technical quality, programme compliance and delivery within agreed budgets.
  • Producing and reviewing engineering calculations, reports, specifications, design drawings and technical documentation.
  • Coordinating structural designs with civil engineering, building services, architectural and other multidisciplinary teams.
  • Working with BIM technicians and design teams to develop coordinated 3D models, drawings and construction information.
  • Identifying and resolving technical challenges, design clashes and buildability issues throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Exploring opportunities to optimise structural layouts, material selection, construction methodologies and overall project efficiency.
  • Incorporating embodied carbon assessments and sustainable design principles into structural engineering solutions.
  • Reviewing contractor proposals, specialist design submissions and technical information to ensure compliance with design requirements.
  • Liaising with clients, architects, contractors and other stakeholders to communicate design solutions and resolve project issues.
  • Monitoring project progress, identifying potential risks and escalating programme, resource or commercial issues where appropriate.
  • Providing technical guidance, mentoring and support to graduate and intermediate engineers.
  • Undertaking quality assurance and quality control reviews of structural calculations, drawings and other design deliverables.
  • Supporting business development activities, client presentations and the continued growth of the structural engineering team.

About You

We are looking for a technically strong and proactive structural engineer who can take responsibility for project delivery, work effectively within a multidisciplinary environment and contribute to the development of innovative engineering solutions.

You will ideally have:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Significant post-graduate experience in structural engineering, preferably within a consultancy environment.
  • Strong experience in the design and analysis of building structures using reinforced concrete and structural steel.
  • A sound understanding of structural engineering principles, load paths, stability, foundations and construction methodologies.
  • Experience delivering structural design projects from concept through to detailed design and construction.
  • A strong working knowledge of relevant Eurocodes, British Standards and UK building regulations.
  • Experience coordinating structural design with architectural, civil engineering and building services disciplines.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design software, such as Tekla Structural Designer, ETABS, Robot Structural Analysis or equivalent packages.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit and BIM coordination processes.
  • The ability to manage project deliverables, prioritise workloads and meet deadlines across multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to liaise directly with clients and project stakeholders.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and reviewing technical work.
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach to engineering design, with an appreciation of buildability, commercial constraints and sustainability.

Chartered status with the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) or the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), or demonstrable progress towards chartership, would be advantageous.

Experience working on data centres, mission-critical facilities, large-scale industrial buildings, logistics developments or other technically complex projects would be particularly beneficial.

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to join a forward-thinking engineering consultancy that values technical excellence, innovation, collaboration and professional development.

You will benefit from:

  • Varied and technically challenging projects: Work across a diverse portfolio of building and infrastructure developments.
  • Technical ownership: Take responsibility for structural design packages and play a key role in project delivery.
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration: Work alongside specialists across structural engineering, civil engineering and BIM.
  • Professional development: Access opportunities for continued learning, technical training and chartership support.
  • Career progression: Develop your project management, client-facing and technical leadership capabilities.
  • Sustainable engineering: Contribute to efficient structural solutions that consider embodied carbon, material use and whole-life performance.
  • Supportive working culture: Join a collaborative team that values knowledge-sharing, accountability and individual development.
  • Competitive benefits: Receive a competitive remuneration package, with benefits and flexible working arrangements.
