Senior Design Manager – Remediation Projects

The Opportunity
An established contractor with a growing remediation and building safety division is seeking an experienced Senior Design Manager to oversee a portfolio of remediation projects across London.
This role will lead the design management function on multiple schemes, focusing on façade remediation, fire safety improvements, cladding replacement, compartmentation works, and wider Building Safety Act compliance projects. You will act as the key link between consultants, clients, residents, subcontractors, and project delivery teams, ensuring designs are coordinated, compliant, and delivered efficiently throughout the project lifecycle.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Design Manager with strong remediation, regeneration, residential, or façade experience looking to take ownership of a growing portfolio of technically challenging projects.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership
- Lead the design process across multiple remediation and building safety projects simultaneously.
- Coordinate architects, façade consultants, fire engineers, structural engineers, and specialist subcontractors.
- Develop and monitor design programmes to ensure information is delivered in line with project milestones.
- Manage design risk registers and ensure risks are identified and mitigated throughout project delivery.
- Drive design solutions that balance compliance, buildability, cost, quality, and programme.
Technical Compliance
- Ensure designs comply with Building Regulations, Approved Documents, and current fire safety legislation.
- Support compliance with the Building Safety Act and Higher-Risk Building requirements where applicable.
- Coordinate Gateway submissions and associated design information.
- Review existing building information and identify design constraints, defects, and remediation solutions.
- Ensure robust design reviews are undertaken throughout each project stage.
Stakeholder Management
- Act as the primary design lead for clients, residents, consultants, and operational teams.
- Manage consultant performance and ensure high-quality design deliverables.
- Chair design coordination meetings and technical workshops.
- Provide clear updates on design progress, key risks, and critical decisions to senior management.
Construction Support
- Work closely with project teams to resolve technical and design-related issues during construction.
- Review and manage RFIs, technical submissions, and design changes.
- Support procurement teams with design development and specialist contractor engagement.
- Ensure lessons learned are captured and implemented across the wider portfolio.
Requirements
Essential
- Proven experience as a Senior Design Manager or Design Manager within a main contractor, specialist contractor, developer, or consultancy environment.
- Experience delivering remediation, façade, fire safety, refurbishment, regeneration, or residential projects.
- Strong understanding of Building Regulations and design coordination processes.
- Experience managing multiple projects and consultant teams concurrently.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to manage complex technical issues and drive project outcomes.
Desirable
- Experience of façade remediation and cladding replacement schemes.
- Knowledge of the Building Safety Act, PAS 9980, EWS1 processes, and higher-risk buildings.
- Degree qualified in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Membership of a relevant professional body such as CIOB, RIBA, CIAT, ICE, or IStructE.
