Associate Director –  Highways 

We are currently supporting a dynamic multi-disciplinary consultancy specialising in planning, design, engineering, and landscape architecture, who are passionate about designing places for the people that use them.  They Provide clients with the very best solutions with their approach to integrated designs. 

Led by a forward-thinking leadership team, they work across 4 UK regions to form multi-disciplinary teams that provide services that are well thought-out and environmentally sustainable. 

They have a significant number of existing clients and project work and are going through an exciting growth period and need to develop and expand their engineering capability, thus are now looking for an Associate Highways Director. 

 As an Associate Director the type of work you might be involved in will vary considerably; from multi-million-pound highway improvements to town centre regeneration projects, bus priority schemes, cycle ways, public realm enhancements and many more. You will be challenged but fully supported to develop into a highly competent senior leader. You will be responsible for developing construction packs, applying NEC contract requirements, CDM regulations and technical approvals. You will have the opportunity to meet clients face to face and develop your own personal relationships with client managers. You will also be provided with considerable commercial responsibility, developing quality and fee submissions, and managing several projects to deliver within budget and programme constraints.

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure that projects are managed within their respective budgets.
  • Prepare fee estimates and quality submissions for new work.
  • Provide technical direction and design support on a wide range of projects
  • Provide technical advice / approvals for project deliverables.
  • Comply with the QMS.
  • Liaise and work closely with other Project Centre staff on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Respond to client and customer requests and enquiries (including internal customers)
  • Actively market Project Centre to clients.
  • Be flexible – carry out any duties as and when required for the good of the company.
  • Develop self and staff in accordance with personal and individual training plans.

  • Degree / HNC Civil Engineering with substantial relevant experience of at least 10 years in highways detailed design
  • Chartered or Incorporated membership ICE/CIHT (or close to applying).
  • Experience managing large teams and significant budgets at senior level

  • Detailed technical knowledge and expertise in highways engineering
  • Seasoned professional with substantial experience in professional discipline
  • Professional experience in project management
  • Business knowledge and understanding
  • Skills and experience in people management
  • Knowledge and experience of profit and loss financial management.
  • Commercial management of small to large projects (£10k to £1m plus fees).
  • Demonstrable commercial awareness and skills.
  • Knowledge of CDM duties
  • Knowledge of NEC3 contracts
  • Expertise in application of DMRB design standards
  • Knowledge and understanding of street lighting and drainage design requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience of business development, including fee estimation and proposal preparation.
  • Skills and experience in people management
  • Experience managing multiple projects both technically and financially.
